As most of you know I have been leading and speaking to networking groups for quite some time. Over the years I have been telling business owners that it is very important to build relationships with the people that you meet in networking groups.

I know that some of you might be saying here he goes again…. Blah, Blah, Here is why I am writing this. Last week we had a TTBN Meeting in Katy and I had a couple of attendees complain about people that were going on and on about how they could help them with their business. Now I know that most of you could help people in their business but there is a process to follow.

First, you should LEARN more about someone before you just assume that they need or want your Help! Second, you should have enough respect for the people that you are talking to allow them to either listen to a presentation (if one is being given) or be able to talk to more of the people in the room if your just networking and not keep them wrapped up in conversation.

Third and most Important, if you feel as though you could help someone take time to make an appointment with them and learn more about them and make sure that you would be the fit to help them!!

We all know that no one can decide in a two minute time period that what you have is what they need. Granted you probably think that what you have or do is what everyone needs. I get it you are just passionate about your product /service.

I just want to make sure to bring something to your attention…. Most of the people that you meet in a networking setting understand the process of networking properly but there are always going to be people that are not aware of it and they typically do not mean any harm.

SO…. Here is my question? Do we get mad and walk away? DO we take time out and make an appointment with them and have that conversation about the proper process of networking?

We all have to learn the rules on everything we do, so make sure to take a servants heart approach when you network. Be the one that helps others in a way that will not EMBARRASS them or HURT THEIR FEELINGS.

I know that it is just easier to walk away and complain but the real payoff is when you take out the time to help others. After all isn’t that what networking is all about?

I hope that you will take time this coming week to plan how you are going to build relationships with those you meet. Remember you are being placed in the environment for a reason. Make sure to help the people that are willing to learn and also figure out how to help the people that don’t know any better.

I am always looking for feedback on these articles so…. Please let me know what you THINK!!!
